Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion

  1. Read Mark 3:31-35. Is Jesus breaking the fifth commandment (see Exodus 20:12)? Why or why not? How does this passage impact how we think of our physical families?
  2. Compare this passage with Luke 14:26. What is Jesus communicating when he says we are to “hate” our mothers and fathers? How does this help us understand what it means to be a disciple?
  3. Still keeping Luke 14:26 in mind, what does Jesus mean by doing “the will of God”? What is the will of God?
  4. What is the significance of being a “brother and sister and mother” of Jesus?
