Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion

  1. Read 1 Peter 1:3-9. Consider the context of Peter’s letter (see 1:1, 2:11-12, 3:17, 4:1, 12, 19, & 5:10). What are the circumstances of the original recipients? What does Peter hope to communicate through his letter?
  2. How does this opening doxology (1:3-9) fit with the rest of the letter? How does the form and order of the letter shape Peter’s message?
  3. Consider the statement: “Happiness, as an emotion, is based on circumstances; joy is an attitude and not based on circumstances.” Do you agree or disagree? Why? How does Peter describe joy in verse 8? Is this joy base on anything (see verse 6)?
  4. What does joy look like in the life of a believer? One who is in the midst of suffering? One who is in the midst of prosperity?
