Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion

  1. Read Isaiah 49:1-6. Who is the Servant? Why would we say the nation of Israel is not the Servant, especially when the Servant is named Israel in verse 3? What is the significance of the Servant being called “Israel”?
  2. What is the “darkness” the people find themselves in? Look back at Isaiah 48, especially verses 4-5, 18-19, & 20-22.
  3. What does it mean for the Servant to “bring back” Jacob and Israel (v. 5-6)? In what way is the Servant “light” for the nations?
  4. Consider what Jesus teaches about light and darkness in John 8:12, 9:1-7, and 3:19-21. In what ways is Jesus fulfilling Isaiah 49? How does one escape darkness and come to the light?
  5. Consider again what Jesus teaches about light in Matthew 5:14-16. How can Jesus tell his disciples that they are the light of the world when he says he is the light of the world? In what ways are we to be light for the nations?

Memory Verse of the Week: Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (ESV)
