  1. Read 2 Kings 2:1-15. Why would Elijah ask Elisha three times to stay behind? What sort of impact could Elijah’s departure have on Elisha?
  2. Elijah has played a significant role in the life of Israel during this era of Ahab’s reign. How could Elijah’s departure impact the people of God?
  3. What strikes you about Elijah’s departure? Why would God choose Elijah for such an exit?
  4. What does it mean that the “spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha”? How does this shape our understanding of John the Baptist’s relationship to Elijah (cf. Lk. 1:17; Matt. 17:9-13)?
  5. In a chapter that God is not directly mentioned or involved, how is God the central character of 2 Kings 2? How does a healthy, biblical understanding of God help guard us from hero worship of ministry leaders?
