Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:
- Read Isaiah 61:1-7. Who is speaking in the first person? Compare with the other “Servant Songs” in Isaiah 42:1-4, 49:5-6, and 50:4-6. What do we learn about this “servant”?
- What is the connection between the anointing of the Spirit and a ministry of proclaiming (preaching)?
- Consider the seven infinitives in verses 1-3 (i.e. “to proclaim…” “to comfort…” “to grant…”). What is the mission of the Servant? Jesus quotes these verses in Luke 4:18-19. How does Jesus fulfill these verses?
- In verse 3, what results from the ministry of the Servant? Explain.
- Verses 4-7 give a picture of restoration. Is this past, present, or future? Explain.
Memory Verse of the Week:
Isaiah 61:7 Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion; instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot; therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion; they shall have everlasting joy. (ESV)
