Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read Ecclesiastes 9:13-10:20. In your best words how would you describe biblically someone who is foolish and someone who is wise?
  2. The Preacher wants to stress choosing wisdom over folly even in seemingly small, insignificant moments of life. If the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord, are there moments in your day that you practically “live by your own strength and wisdom” apart from God?
  3. The Preacher gives us some practical results that spring from a truly wise person. The wise person will be calm and self-controlled (10:4), will be on the path of success (10:10), and will use gracious, life-giving words of truth (10:12). In what areas can you ask God for wisdom today (James 1:5)?
  4. The Preacher wants us to wisely navigate life under the sun with proper attention to even the little things. He draws the significance of this through the use of images of flies (10:1), serpents (10:8, 11), and birds (10:20). How does the Preacher make his point with the images of these animals?
  5. How does this section of Ecclesiastes wisely draw our hearts to hope in the gospel of Jesus Christ alone?

Memory Verse of the Week:

Colossians 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. (ESV)
